Part of the mission at Saratoga Community Health Center is to educate through opportunity. Our Nutrition as Medicine program allows us to engage with patients, providing them nutritional information and access to locally grown vegetables. In 2015, we built a small community garden at the health center which allowed our patients to take fresh greens home to their families. Since the garden was a huge success in its inaugural year, we decided to replant our garden in April.
In an effort to continue closing the gap between our patients and access to nutritional produce, we have formed a partnership with Regional Food Bank in support of our Nutrition as Medicine Program. Patients diagnosed with elevated blood pressure (hypertension), hyperlipidemia, diabetes or obesity can receive a Nutrition Rx from their primary care provider and are given a bag of vegetables every week, along with recipes and instructions for food preparation. The primary care provider also works hand in hand with the patient to set and work towards achieving positive health outcomes. Our team also supplies weekly motivation and support to each patient in the program.
The Regional Food Bank collects large donations of fresh produce from the food industry and delivers to organizations who feed the hungry. We are extremely grateful to the Patroon Land Farm for allowing us to get more vegetables into the hands of our patients. From lettuce and broccoli in the early season to winter squash and potatoes in the late harvest, the Patroon Land Farm provides an ongoing source of nutritious produce throughout the year.
